Responsible Play
Poker is entertainment. For most players it's a fun, skill-based pursuit that pays its own way over time or costs the price of an evening out. For some players, it stops being either of those things and becomes harmful. This page exists because we want our readers to recognize that line and stay on the right side of it.
If you need help right now: contact the PAGCOR Responsible Gaming Hotline at (02) 8525-7332 or email rgep@pagcor.ph. International readers can contact the Gambling Therapy 24/7 free helpline.
Warning signs of problem gambling
The line between recreational and problem play is rarely clear in the moment. These are the patterns to watch for in yourself or someone you care about:
- Playing with money you can't afford to lose, or money meant for bills, rent, or family expenses
- Chasing losses โ playing longer or higher to try to win back what you've lost
- Lying to family or friends about how much you're playing or losing
- Borrowing money to play, especially repeatedly
- Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when you're not playing
- Skipping work, family events, or sleep to play
- Selling possessions, taking cash advances, or hitting credit limits to fund play
- Feeling like you "deserve" a win or that one is coming soon based on losses
- Increasing time and money spent over weeks or months
One sign by itself doesn't mean a problem. Multiple signs together, or any one sign that's escalating, is the warning that matters.

Self-exclusion at major Philippine venues
If you want to remove yourself from temptation at a specific casino, every PAGCOR-licensed venue runs a Self Exclusion Program. The standard process:
- Visit the venue's Responsible Gaming desk (located near the main entrance at all major resorts).
- Bring a valid government ID.
- Sign a self-exclusion form specifying duration (6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or permanent).
- Submit your photo for the venue's recognition system.
Once enrolled, the venue is required by PAGCOR regulation to deny you entry for the duration. You cannot reverse the decision until the period ends. Major venues include:
- Okada Manila
- Solaire Resort Manila
- Resorts World Manila
- City of Dreams Manila
- Newport World Resorts
- Hann Casino Resort (Clark)
- NUStar Cebu
- Waterfront Cebu
Healthy play guidelines
If you don't have a problem and want to keep it that way, the following habits work for most players:
- Set a session loss limit before you sit down. Stand up when you hit it. No exceptions.
- Set a session time limit. Live cash sessions over 8 hours rarely end well; tournament sessions are different.
- Maintain a separate poker bankroll from your living expenses. Use our Required Bankroll calculator to figure out a healthy size for your stakes.
- Track your sessions. Players who track their P&L play more soberly. Players who don't usually overestimate their results.
- Take breaks during sessions. 5 minutes off the table every hour, real food and water during long sessions.
- Don't play tilted. If you've just taken a brutal beat, lost a buy-in to a cooler, or had a rough day at work โ don't sit down. The session that follows tilt is the session that breaks bankrolls.
- Don't play impaired. Alcohol, exhaustion, emotional distress โ all of these compound losses.
- Take real time off. A week off the felt every few months is healthy. A month off after a major series is recommended.
For families and partners
If you're worried about someone in your life, the best support you can offer is:
- Don't lend them money to play. It always becomes more.
- Don't make excuses for them or cover their losses.
- Express concern directly, calmly, with specifics (not "you have a problem" but "I noticed you played eight hours yesterday and skipped dinner").
- Encourage them to call the PAGCOR helpline or use one of the international resources above.
- Take care of your own wellbeing. Living with a problem gambler is itself a hardship โ Gam-Anon and Gambling Therapy both have family support resources.
